I kept myself busy in my room while James and Eric spent time together. I vowed that I would stick to my own rules, starting tonight. But then there was a knock on my door a few hours later and even though I knew who it was, I couldn’t hold myself back.

I could have simply pretended that I was already asleep, but I didn’t. I went over and opened the door to find Eric on the other side. He had a glass of whiskey in his hand already, although he didn’t look like he’d been drinking for long.

“How is he?” I asked. If I hadn’t said something we’d just be standing there staring at each other in silence. The feverish attraction between us was palpable, and tonight, I felt like I needed him.

Eric ran a hand through his hair and sighed aloud. “He’s fine. He went to sleep easily and I sat with him a while longer. He’s doing a lot better because of you.”

I blushed. I was never one for taking compliments easily, and I definitely couldn’t handle them from Eric. I looked down at my feet awkwardly and tried to steady my breathing.

“It’s strange, but I really do care about James. I know it’s only been a few days.”

“I can see that,” he said promptly and our eyes met again.

“I just wanted to come by to say how much I appreciate the work you are doing with my son. You have made a real difference in our lives and for that, I will always be grateful to you.” Even though Eric’s words were kind and gentle, that wasn’t the way he was looking at me. There was a dark glare in his eyes. I didn’t have to take a wild guess to know what he was thinking.

He was undressing me with my eyes.

But after the way he rejected me the previous night, I wasn’t going to make the first move tonight. I couldn’t put myself through that again.

“I’m just doing my job,” I replied.

He shook his head.

“No, you’re doing more than that. You’re going above and beyond to help James feel better about our lives here in Chicago. He was doing much worse before you came into the picture. I…was doing much worse.”

I licked my bottom lip nervously. I hadn’t expected him to make this about himself. A thrill ran through my body. What was he saying? I made him happy? What did that mean?

I’d never had a conversation like this with a man before.

These were never the emotions exchanged.

Eric seemed to be watching me closely and then he took a large sip of the whiskey and breathed heavily into his glass.

“And I’m going to take your advice and look into the situation at his playschool.”

I was relieved to hear that, and it made me smile.

“That would be a huge help. I’m fairly certain James isn’t happy in that place for a particular reason.”

“I’ll speak to the teachers and see what they have to say.”

I nodded. I couldn’t believe he actually respected my opinion and took it seriously.
